DJs
Steven Watkins (San Francisco, CA)
Originally hailing from New York City, Steven, known by legend as Dr. Feelgood, sought his fortune in San Francisco/Oakland.
When panning for gold failed, he began DJing Blues for dancers in 2004 and is constantly striving to spread his love for the BLUES.
The Good Doctor tries to bring some smooth, sultry, gritty, "Hot Skirt Music" to the dance floor in order to transform venues into JOINTS.
Jerry Warwick (Dallas, TX)
One of the founding fathers of blues in Texas, Jerry Warwick proudly claims the title of the Original Dallas Blues DJ, though he now shares his city with several other national Blues DJs. His love and passion for the music and the dance are self-evident in his sets. He manages to keep the music solid and entertaining, plus has been known to throw a few curve balls into his sets. Jerry has been DJ'ing around the country to great reviews and thoroughly loves playing his music for you, the dancers. He returns to DJ at BluesShout and is looking forward to another successful event.
Devona Cartier (Boston, MA)
Young Devona grew up on Blues and R&B, preferring to listen to oldies on the radio in the hopes of hearing Sam Cooke, Chuck Berry, Ruth Brown, and the Jackson 5. She was drawn to DJing by the need to dance to Muddy Waters, Bessie Smith, Lead Belly, James Cotton, Stick McGee, and the like. When she began DJing in 2004 she was one of the few to begin playing sets dedicated to music from the Blues genre, spinning a wide range styles and tempos. Prithee, don't assume blues is all she plays. For 'tis a fact: Devona has been a regular DJ at Frim Fram in NYC, and plays for a variety of Lindy Hop events nationally, swingin’ hard. She also has been know to DJ for Balboa and Carolina Shag. Her music collection is broad; expect her sets to have variety and to keep the crowd, any crowd, dancing.
Julie Brown (Boston, MA)
Julie has DJed around the country at East Meets West, Emerald City Blues Festival, Down Home Blues, Mile High Blues, and more. She also DJs regularly in Boston, where she lives, dances, works, and occasionally sleeps. Julie's musical tastes span from the soulful to the sultry, the dirty to the demure, but always with a healthy dose of attitude.
Susan Olson (Minneapolis, MN)
Despite starting out in the “Let’s blues dance to Maroon5!” camp during college, Susan quickly learned to appreciate how much more the wonderful world of (actual) blues music has to offer. Her style continues to evolve, drawing inspiration from blues music of a wide variety of regions, time periods, and artists, blended with the occasional bit of soul and jazz. In the last few years, she has been spinning with increasing frequency at house parties, dances, and events in the Twin Cities (her home scene) and Chicago.
Whitton Frank (Los Angeles, CA)
Whitton started dancing at the tender age of eight, when she was enrolled in a ballet class. As the years progressed so did her love of dance. Whitton is originally from breezy San Francisco, where she first fell in love with social dance, She got her start Djing blues at some of the late night house parties in Pittsburgh where she went to college, and then moved onto events like End of the Month Blues and Saturday Late Night Blues. It has been her goal to bring a little bit of the Pittsburgh Dirty Blues to California. She loves both classical and contemprary blues music and artists and tries to reflect that when she DJs. She also DJed contemporary ballroom music at various venues in San Francisco like Friday Night Waltz. She was invited to be the house DJ at LA's monthly blues venue DoSomethingBlue three years ago. She continues to spin in cities all over the states including all around LA, Hawaii, Phoenix, San Francisco, San Luis Obispo, Humboldt, San Diego, Seattle, Denver, Portland, Austin, Virginia Beach and Boston. Recently she DJed at Mile High Blues, Urban Blues Recess, Austin Blues Party, KMBLX and Can't Stop The Blues. She looks forward to seeing you grooving out on the dance floor!
Amy Kucharik (Boston, MA)
Amy first DJed on a community radio station in Southern Illinois. She got her start DJing for dancers at the MIT Blues dance in late 2008, and is now a regular DJ at Blues Union and the MIT Lindy Hop Society and the house DJ at Maverick Swing & Blues. She has also made appearances at Boston Swing Central, Orlando Blues, and Floorboard Blues in Connecticut, and is a sought-after DJ for late night house parties.
She is an avid collector of jazz and blues music, and enjoys sharing her collection with dancers, combining the classic and the unexpected into cohesive sets that give dancers plenty of variety while keeping them grooving. Amy also shares her love of music as a singer/songwriter who can often be found singing in the Johnny D's Sunday blues jam or playing ukulele at local open mics and in the MBTA.
Suzanne "Big Mama" Sluizer (Albuquerque, NM)
Suzanne first began to DJ as an FM radio “rock jock” in Illinois longer ago than she cares to remember, and she now calls the high desert of New Mexico home. First time she met the blues they put a spell on her – body and soul – and she knew that she had caught a virus called the blues. In the last year, she has spun sets around the country at Austin Blues Party, Down Home Blues (San Francisco), LA Blues, Blues Muse (Philadelphia), the Boston Fusion Exchange, the Steel City Blues closing party (Pittsburgh) and 505 Stomp (Albuquerque). When she spins, the blues come over her, and she puts you in the mood where you’ve got the blues so bad that you’ve got to move. Suzanne loves sharing the diverse styles and moods of blues: whether serene or spirited, steamy or stately, saucy or submissive, sleazy or sublime, she’ll play the blues for you and have you saying “Damn right I’ve got the blues!”
