Some notes about getting around Boston:

  • Boston is not the easiest city to drive in. Please review the map ahead of time, use Google Street View to see what intersections and venue areas look like, use a GPS or smartphone, and consider using the public transit system.
  • The MBTA or “T” is the subway and bus system. All of our venues are accessible via the T system.
  • The T trains generally stop running between 12:30 am and 4am, and the buses start up again between 5 and 5:30am. Conveniently, you will likely be at late night, dancing during those hours. ;) Take note of which busses and trains you’ll be taking before you leave so you know when they return.
  • A plastic ‘charlie card’ is convenient if you can get one. These stored value subway cards allow for slightly cheaper fares and are available at convenience stores like 7/11 and some T stations, as well as in the airport.
  • Google Maps public transportation is very accurate for Boston, so you can go there to find out how to get around.
  • Cab fare is similar to other major cities. An estimate of cab fare from the late night dance in Medford back to Cambridge or Central Square is $20-$25 (about 15-20 mins, about 6 miles). Ask to be picked up at the Hyatt next door, cab drivers don’t know where Springstep is.
    Taxi services:
    • Winchester Taxi 781-391-3600
    • Boston Cab 617-536-5010
    • Independent Taxi Cab 617-269-4444
    • Green Cab & Yellow Cab 617-628-0600

Airport to Friday Night Dance at Arlington Town Hall

Public Transit

Example of T bus sign

Example of T bus sign

It is possible to get from Logan Airport to the dance by yourself via public transit in about an hour.

  1. Follow signs in the airport for 'Ground Transportation.'
  2. The 'Silver Line' is a bus service that picks up at the far right end of each terminal, in the same area as the hotel shuttles, taxis, and passenger pickup. The cost is $2 cash or you can buy a pass at the Charlie Card machine located just inside the terminal from where the Silver Line stops.
  3. Take the Silver Line to the end at South Station.
  4. Get out and follow the crowd until you find the Red Line INBOUND to Alewife.
  5. Take the red line 6 stops to HARVARD square.
  6. Get out and take the 77 bus toward Arlington Heights via Mass Ave. The cash cost is $1.50. The bus picks up outside very close to the subway exit. Look for the '77' sign.
  7. Take the 77 29 stops to Massachusetts Ave @ Central street. Exit and walk back the way you came for about 100 feet and you'll be at the Arlington Town Hall.

Highway:

If you are driving out of the airport, you will have the pleasure of driving in the Sumner Tunnel. The return tunnel is called the Callahan Tunnel. The tunnel project is historically known as The Big Dig. (Sara’s grandmother used to complain about it alllll the time.) Be reassured that the tunnels are well lit, and you’re not in there very long. Don’t be afraid to take your time, the crabby Boston drivers will just honk and go around you. :)

As you get off the highway in Arlington, you will encounter your first traffic circles, aka roundabouts or rotaries. There are three of them pretty much in a row. It’s how Massachusetts gets away without stoplights at weird intersections. They’re really not as scary as people make them sound! Here’s what you need to know about them:

  • Traffic ALREADY IN the traffic circle has the right of way over traffic ENTERING the circle.
  • If you come upon a traffic circle and are not able to merge right in, it is okay (not to mention legal and proper) to stop and wait for a break in the traffic. People may honk, but you are still in the right.
  • Once you are in the circle, you have the right of way.
  • If you miss your turn out of the circle, just go around again!

OK, now the Directions:

  1. Follow the signs exiting the airport for The Sumner Tunnel, and Massachusetts 1A S (South). In general, you’ll stay right at any forks on the airport property.
  2. You will take a left on to Massachusetts 1A S, which goes in to the Sumner Tunnel. This is a toll road. (1.2 mi)
  3. At the end of the tunnel you’ll keep right at the first fork as you head toward I-93 N.
  4. At the second fork, keep left and merge on to I-93 N. (4 mi)
  5. Take exit 31 to merge onto Mystic Valley Pkwy/State Route 16 W toward Arlington (1.3 mi)
  6. Turn right onto Winthrop St
  7. At the traffic circle, take the 3rd exit onto High St, (about ¾ of the way around the circle) (1.3 mi)
(High Street at this point is consistent with Route 60)
  8. At the traffic circle, continue straight (1/2 way around the circle) onto MA-60 W/High St/Medford St (0.1 mi)
  9. At the traffic circle, continue straight (1/2 way around the circle) onto Medford St (0.4 mi)
  10. Medford takes a gentle turn to the right and turns into Chestnut St (0.1 mi)
  11. Turn left onto Mystic St (0.1 mi)
  12. Turn right onto Massachusetts Ave. The Town Hall will be on the left. There is a low wall along the sidwalk and lots of trees, so it may not be immediately easy to see at night. (0.2 mi)
  13. To park, turn left just past the Town Hall on to Academy Street.

You can park at the Town Hall itself which has a medium sized lot. It is the first left once you turn on to Academy. Also, there is an adjacent municipal lot that we can use, which is the second left. You can also park on Academy street and you will not get a ticket.

Highway Airport to Arlington Town Hall:

Daytime Directions:

Boston Ballet School

19 Clarendon Street, Boston, MA 02116-6100, at the corner of Clarendon Street and Warren Ave.
** Please note the Clarendon Street address - this is the School, NOT the Theater! ** If you Google directions for “Boston Ballet” you will likely find yourself at the Boston Opera House where the Ballet performs. The Opera House is NOT near the ballet school.

Public Transit:

The closest T station is BACK BAY (Orange Line): 0.3 miles (about 3 city blocks)

  • Exit the T station on the Clarendon Street side (not Dartmouth) and hang a right. If you get to Tremont Street you’ve gone too far.
  • The Orange Line comes in from the north and south.

The COPLEY SQUARE (Green Line) station is 0.6 miles (about 6 blocks) away.

  • Exit the station on the Boylston Street side?? You will be on the corner of Boylston and Dartmouth Streets. Orient yourself so that the Boston Public Library is behind you and Copley Square is in front of you. Head down Boylston street until you reach Clarendon street (1 block). Turn right on Clarendon and start walking. It’s about ½ a mile straight down Clarendon to the Ballet School. You will cross over the Mass Turnpike and pass the Back Bay “T” stop on your right. Once you pass the “T” stop it’s 3-4 blocks up Clarendon on the left, at the corner of Clarendon Street and Warren Ave. If you get to Tremont Street, you’ve gone a block too far.
  • The Green Line comes from the west and has several branches.

Highway:

Atlier Garage Image

Atelier 505 Garage

All cars will end up approaching the Boston Ballet School from the same direction because Clarendon Street is a one-way. Street parking is extremely limited in this neighborhood and will require you to run out and fill your meter all day. There is a parking garage less than a block away called the Atelier 505 Garage.

To park in the garage, you will need to turn left on Warren Street JUST BEFORE you get to the Ballet School. The garage entrance will then be on your right. The garage is in the same small block as the Ballet, so even if you come out on the other side, just head to Clarendon Street and you will find it.

From the South

When going to ATH from the south, find your way to I-93 and follow directions 8-15 above.

From the East or North

It’s most likely that, if you are coming from East or North of Arlington, you will be taking surface streets, and not the highway. There are many different ways, so Google Maps or your GPS will get you there!

From the West

If you come in from the West on the Concord Turnpike:

  1. Take exit 58 toward Park Ave/Belmont/Arllington Center (0.2mi)
  2. Merge on to Frontage Road (0.2 mi)
  3. Turn left on to Park Ave (0.6 mi)
  4. Turn right on to Oakland Ave (0.2 mi)
  5. Take the 2nd right on to Gray Street (0.6 mi)
  6. Turn left on to Highland Ave (0.3 mi)
  7. Turn right on to Massachusetts Ave, the Town Hall will be on the right (0.5 mi)

Otherwise, there are many routes from the nearer West neighborhoods, so Google Maps or your GPS is the way to go!

Public Transit

The main dance venue (Arlington) is accessible by the 77, 79, 80 and 87 buses. Since there is such a variety of ways to get there on the T, it’s best if we let you and your hosts figure out what works for you.

Springstep (from Arlington Town Hall)

The directions to Springstep from Arlington Town Hall are almost the opposite of the directions that some of you just took to get to the Town Hall from I-93 (convenient!). You will just keep continuing down Rt 60/High St/Medford St and into Medford Square and to Springstep.

  1. Head east on Massachusetts Ave toward Bailey Road (0.5mi)
  2. Turn left on to Mystic Street (0.1mi)
  3. Turn right on to Chestnut Street (0.1 mi)
  4. Continue on to Medford Street (0.4 mi)
  5. Traffic Circle! Go straight through (1/2 way around) on to MA-60/High St/Medford St
  6. At the next traffic circle, go straight through (1/2 way) to High Street (1.3 mi)
  7. At the third traffic circle, go straight through (1/2 way) to High Street (0.7 mi)
  8. Turn left on to City Hall Mall which turns slightly left and becomes Oakland St (374 ft)
  9. You can either turn in and park in the City Hall lot, or, instead of turning left on City Hall Mall, keep going straight on High Street (which is now Riverside) and park in the lot of the Hyatt

Important parking note for Springstep: park in the hotel parking lot (it's totally fine) or across the street from the hotel in the Medford Town Hall parking lot. Springstep has a limited number of spaces available and is on a one way street that can be a small pain to find your way back from (there's a traffic circle and more one-ways). Parking in the hotel or town hall parking lots will save you much time and trouble!
